Program Title:National River Cleanup Week May 31-June 8
Date/Time: June 2, 2008, 9:00 AM-2:00 PM CST-- Whitewater River
Location: Whitewater River—meet at Green Acres Canoe Rental--Suspension Bridge Road

Description: 8 mile section of the Whitewater River in the state of Ohio. Cleanup dates are actually June 2nd thru the 6th. Meet at Green Acres Canoe Rental on Suspension Bridge Road. Use of canoes are free to use by the volunteers. Wear "grungy" clothes and workboots/old gym shoes. Bring gloves, sunscreen, shovel and a change of clothes. A small cooler with 3-4 waters is a good idea. Pizza will be provided by Green Acres after the cleanup.

Program Title: Paddling Quick Start Programs—Canoe & Kayak
Date/Time: Beginning at 12:00pm. Canoe: June 14. Kayak June 22, July 12, August 2, September 23, October 13.
Location: Adventure Outpost in Winton Woods
Registration: Register for these events online. If you prefer to register by mail, send your check payable to the Hamilton County Park District to: Canoe & Kayak, 10245 Winton Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231. Be sure to include your name, address and daytime contact phone number. Indicate program name and date.
Cost: Cost for this program is $20 for adults and $15 for children 6 to 18. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Description: These three-hour sessions will teach the basics to paddling a canoe or kayak on flat and slow-moving water. Participants will learn about the equipment, paddling techniques and maneuverability, and how to properly launch and disembark from their watercraft. Then they can put their new skills to the test on Winton Lake. The classes are led by an American Canoe Association certified instructor. All equipment will be provided and flotation devices will by worn at all times.

Program Title: 7th Annual Ohio River Way Paddlefest

Description: Largest Canoe & Kayak Festival in the Midwest Celebrate the beauty of the Ohio River by paddling it! The 7th Annual Ohio River Way Paddlefest will take place in Cincinnati June 27-28, 2008. Recognized as the Midwest's largest on-water canoe and kayak event, Paddlefest will draw over 1,500 paddlers to the Ohio River for canoeing, kayaking, entertainment and fun. This year Paddlefest will be moving to Cincinnati's Coney Island. On Friday, June 27, our Kids' Ex-Stream Paddlefest EXPO (10a.m.-2p.m.) and our Ohio River Music & Outdoor Festival (2p.m.-midnight) will make use of Coney's picnic shelters and Lake Como for our exhibits, boat demos, paddling clinics and live music. On Saturday morning, paddlers will start their trip at the same spot used 100 years ago to discharge passengers arriving on the Island Queen for a picnic in the 'country'. Once again, our Finish Line Festival will be held at the Serpentine Wall (10am-2pm) with our new "Swim the Ohio" event providing an extra challenge for hearty souls!

Program Title: Little Miami River Canoe & Kayak Trips
Date/Time: Trips begin at 11:00am. Canoe: June 28. Kayak: June 7, June 29, July 13, August 10, August 24, September 14, September 27.
Location: Participants will meet at Lake Isabella public canoe launch. Transportation back to Lake Isabella will be provided.

Description:Come join us for a 7.5 mile trip down the scenic Little Miami River. We will begin the trip at Lake Isabella and take out at the Jim Terrell Park in Milford. Bring a lunch as we will stop and enjoy the sights and sounds of this national scenic river. This trip is led by an American Canoe Association certified instructor. All equipment will be provided and flotation devices will be worn at all times. Quick Start is a prerequisite for these trips.

Program Title: Great Ohio River Paddle 2008 (GORP 2008)
Date/Time: Saturday, July 19 - Sunday, July 20, 2008
Location: Saturday from Ripley, OH to Chilo, OH (18 miles), and Sunday from Chilo, OH to Moscow, OH (8 miles) 20 Ohio River miles total (mileage may vary depending upon which PaddlePod you participate in)

Description: The Great Ohio River Paddle 2008 (GORP 2008) will be Saturday, July 19 - Sunday, July 20, 2008. Paddlers will stop each day at different sites. Along the way, naturalists, biologists, scientists, and local historians will share their knowledge and experiences. Many have intimate knowledge and up-to-date information about their areas of expertise. Paddlers will lock through a shipping lock that calmly lowers you more than 20 feet in a few minutes. Come explore, learn, and have fun! Fee includes: meals, camp-site fees and arrangements, insights from naturalists and historians, safety paddlers/guides, paddler shuttle, drinking water, snacks, and all the logistical details handled by GORP. Paddlers will be able to select 3 different paddling "pods" for a more personal experience: - An EcoPod - learn about the ecological jewel of the Ohio. This includes at least one tributary trip. - A TouristPod - paddle across the Ohio and disembark at Augusta, KY for lunch and a walking tour of this historic Ohio River town. - An EndurancePod - paddle, paddle, paddle - you want a workout? - paddle the Ohio and a few tribs.

Description: Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s reputation as a resolute defender of the environment stems from a litany of successful legal actions. Mr. Kennedy was named one of Time magazine’s “Heroes for the Planet” for his success in helping Riverkeeper lead the fight to restore the Hudson River. The group’s achievement helped spawn more than 160 Waterkeeper organizations across the globe.  Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is this years recipient of the Barrows Conservation Award. This event is sponsored by Xavier University’s Ethics/Religion & Society program and co-sponsored by Xavier’s Brueggeman Center for Dialogue and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s Barrows Lecture Series.
