return to courses   Voluntary Simplicity

An eight week course examining personal issues of consumption as well as distractions that keep us from caring for Earth.

In a society that enjoys such unprecedented prosperity, why is there so much personal unhappiness and discontent? With such abundance, why has poverty and hunger continued to grow at record speed, in our own nation and around the world? Why in a finite world do we continue to act as if there are no limits to growth, while polluting our air, water and soil and using Earth's resources faster than her natural systems can be replenished?

Simplicity is a movement, a practice, and for many, a purposeful way of living in a complex, consumptive society. To simplify is to reduce to essentials, to streamline and to clarify. This is a growing movement resulting in a life which is outwardly simple and inwardly rich.
